This is the executive summary of the assessment of risks and alternatives for a long-standing practice at the Sellafield site — storage of high level radioactive waste (HLW) as a liquid. IRSS’s complete assessment is described in a June 1998 report which is supported by nine technical appendices. Although IRSS’s work has focussed on risks and alternatives for HLW management, the work has necessarily addressed some related issues. IRSS has examined the economics of nuclear fuel reprocessing at Sellafield, the UK approach to assessing nuclear activities and alternative options, and the effectiveness of the UK Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII).
This report summarizes an international workshop whose broad purpose was to improve the collection and dissemination of information on technologies that can limit atmospheric emissions of greenhouse gases. Within that broad purpose, the workshop focused on the design of a technology database being developed for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The workshop, sponsored by the US Department of Energy, was held at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, on 18-19 February 1992. It was attended by technical, scientific and information-management experts from a variety of countries and institutions.
